Bulgarian Cabinet Resigns

Bulgarian prime minister Boiko Borisov submitted his and his cabinet's resignation this morning. The resignation comes after a tumultuous week of demonstration around the country in protest of high energy prices, corruption, economic difficulties and overall dissatisfaction with the government. The escalating tensions caused bloody clashes between demonstrators and the police yesterday. Parliament will vote on the resignation tomorrow, however the current cabinet will stay in place until either a new cabinet is approved by the Parliament or an interim one is appointed by the President. The latter is more likely, considering statements by several of the parties in Parliament that they are not interested in forming a new cabinet. Regular elections were expected to take place in July, but will probably be scheduled for an earlier date.

In the midst of all this, finance minister Djankov has withdrawn his resignation. Since Parliament was not able to vote in the fill-ins for new finance minister and new vice-prime minister, Djankov will stay in these position for the time being.

The Wall Street Journal also has an article on the topic here and another one on the Bulgarian economic prospects here.
